Background of the Study
Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for disseminating information, including health-related content. In Yobe State, the widespread adoption of platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp offers a unique opportunity to enhance public health awareness. Social media can facilitate rapid communication of health messages, promote preventive behaviors, and engage communities in health-related discussions (Adamu, 2023; Suleiman & Mohammed, 2024). However, the quality and accuracy of health information on social media vary widely, which may influence its effectiveness. Misinformation and sensationalized content can undermine public health efforts and lead to harmful behaviors. This study aims to evaluate how social media influences health awareness in Yobe State by analyzing user engagement, message credibility, and the overall impact on health knowledge and practices. A mixed-methods approach, including content analysis, surveys, and focus groups, will be employed to capture a comprehensive picture of social media’s role in shaping health perceptions and behaviors.
Statement of the Problem
While social media has the potential to significantly improve health awareness in Yobe State, its impact is mixed due to the prevalence of misinformation and varying levels of digital literacy among users. Many residents rely on social media as a primary source of health information, yet the accuracy of this information is not guaranteed. This can lead to confusion, unhealthy practices, and resistance to evidence-based health interventions. Additionally, the effectiveness of social media campaigns in reaching and influencing diverse demographic groups remains unclear. The lack of systematic evaluation of social media’s role in public health has resulted in a gap in understanding how these platforms can be optimized to improve health awareness. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the influence of social media on health awareness in Yobe State, providing insights that can inform the design of more effective digital health communication strategies.
